The integrity of the ISO 17799 standards is one of the underlying reasons for the global acceptance of ISO 17799 as the basis for Information Security Management Systems. Inherent in the integrity of ISO 17799 is the governance and guidance of important institutions. These institutions provide the forum and structure for the continuing growth and improvement of the ISO 17799.

International Organization of Standards (ISO): A non-profit group, based in Geneva, Switzerland. This group coordinates the efforts of 130 nation bodies and technical advisory groups in the promulgation of international standards for all businesses. Learn more about ISO.

American National Standards Institute (ANSI): A private, nonprofit membership organization, ANSI is supported by a diverse constituency of private and public sector organizations. Founded in 1918 by five engineering societies and three government agencies, the Institute serves as administrator and coordinator of the United States private sector voluntary standardization system. Learn more about ANSI.

Registrars: Groups that inspect organizations for proper adherence to ISO standards and determine if the requirements for registration have been met. Registrars will perform a registration audit prior to granting a company ISO 17799 registration, and will usually perform two surveillance audits each year to ensure that the certificate is effective.
